When it comes to styling pillows with your furniture, it can get a little overwhelming. There are countless sizes, pattern and textures of pillows. So to help alleviate that stress, I am bringing you 3 designer tips that I have learned on how to select and style the throw pillows that are right for you.
Step One: Remember Pillow Size is Crucial. This is one of the most important things to take note of, the pillow has to fit the piece of furniture. You have to remember that the pillows are accents, not the piece of furniture. However, you can pick a throw pillow that is to small and will make it appear as an after thought. Determine the size of the chair, and the height of the back and use this information to find your perfect throw pillow. There are always pillow covers for easy change.
Step Two: Determine how many pillows are needed for the area. Many of you may be familiar with this rule, but there is a rule of always decorating with items in odd numbers. Now if you have a larger sofa or piece of furniture, this rule does apply. When styling a sofa, the designer recommends five to seven pillows and grouping them at each end of the sofa. The bigger the piece of furniture, the more pillows you need. Never leave a large sectional with just two pillows. Work in odd groups to create a more modern look. As you can see to the right (via Rivers Spencer) she has grouped matching pillows on the end with a smaller rectangle in the middle.
Step Three: Mix pillow patterns and textures. Contrary to what some people say, it is perfectly normal to mix patterns and designs of pillows to create a eclectic and personal look. It's also very important to mix the pillow textures. Now, how do I style them all together? this is a common question, and is quite easy to answer. I recommend, as shown in the picture above, using four pillows on the edge (two on each end) that are matching and use one to two pillows in the center that have texture or that are of different material. Where can I find good, quality pillows? You can find them in just about any design store, antique market or retail outlet. I will link some of my favorite stores, that you can shop online. Ballard Designs: offers a variety of designer quality throw pillow and pillow covers. I hope you found this blog post helpful, hope to see you again next week.
