Blue and white porcelain has been around for centuries, and designers and homeowners have used it as decor and an inspiration since. Wether your home is modern, traditional or in between, blue and white can be used. My personal style is more on the traditional side, with a tiny flare of modern

with French neoclassical attributes. One of the things that draws me to blue and white, is that it is timeless and elegant. I could never see it going out of style.
Many people think that the ginger jars, vases and plates that you see are Chinese but actually many countries use the blue and white color scheme. English porcelain will sometimes display a scene, Chinese chinoiserie will display small images of people and religious structures. As I talked about in one of my previous blog posts, ginger jars have been around for centuries. Originally containing tea, spices, rice and many other ingredients that were imported into other countries. Today, we see many replicas of original ginger jars, retailing anywhere from 15-100 dollars. Original, hand painted ginger jars dating back from the sixteenth century, sold for over $7600 and it was a small container similar to the one of shown on the right, sitting on the golden wall sconce. with the overall blue and white theme. Now you may wonder how in the world you would attach a plate to the wall? They do have plate holders that are shown above, but you can also purchase a sticker, that has a hanger on it that sticks to the back of the plate, and is safer if you have small children or a greater risk of it falling off the wall, you can see them here .

In the photo above (right), this is the entry way to a Manhattan New York apartments. Because of it being in the city, and smaller, the designer has done mirrored panels on the wall to make the entry way feel lighter and bright. When you have a smaller area, if you add a mirror of any size it will make the space feel bigger. I think the mirror panels in the wall molding looks outstanding!
In the photo on the left (Photo Credit: Cathy Kincaid, All Rights Reserved) is another example of using blue and white in an entry way. They have paired light blue and dark blue striped wallpaper with antique panels and six blue and white porcelain plates. I love the lamps, and lamp tables. I think there is nothing more traditional and timeless than a brass candelabra lamp with a black shade. I hope that you have found inspiration from this blog post, and that you can use blue and white in your home.
